SMOK Alien 220W Review

Have you heard about it? If you have not already, what planet are you talking about, my friend? The mod has been making waves in the vaping scene since landing last September. Although this is not the first SMOK mod to use a sidebar, the alien was one of the first to make it a new standard. But there is more to this device than just the firing rod. The UI has made this mod a place in my daily rotation. Once you use it, you will not want to use anything else. SMOK has clearly thought about developing the user experience where it shines. Let’s take a look:

I recently tested the ProColor 225 W, the latest SMOK device. It has already seen me a bit. One year has passed since the launch of its predecessor Alien and not much has changed. Of course, they have improved the interface a bit. In addition, they have added stylish LED lights to compete with mods like the Sigelei Kaos Spectrum. But in terms of performance, they are almost too close for comfort.

Interface

One of the best parts of this device is its big, bright screen. The main screen displays watts, ohms, amps, volts, mode, puffs and duration of each turn, clear and wholesome. You can even control your internal PCB in real time. What can you ask for more? Three short clicks on the trigger bar bring you to the selection screen, where you can choose between mode, breath, settings and performance. Just press the fire button to access each additional menu.

The Design

Carbon fiber and diagonal inserts give this model the distinctive look. It’s hard to talk about mod without referring to its wavy design. At the time of publication, there was no mod that looked like it. Just a year later and it’s a different story. Now we have modifications like Vaporesso Revenger, Wismec Predator and Sigelei Kaos Spectrum. All of this takes visible design clues from the mod that triggered everything. Supports SMOK for innovation. The Fire Bar has the right balance of strength and responsiveness. The left and right knobs are also great clicks. The USB port is right at the bottom of the screen and is the perfect place for it.

Performance

Unlike its pocket shape, the alien needs 220 watts. This should be more than enough for almost all vape styles. For me 80-100 watts do the trick with larger coils. I usually exchange batteries once a day, or twice if I really go to HAM. The output power is accurate compared to other mods I’ve tested. The battery efficiency is fine, especially given the brightness of the LED screen. Monitoring the life of every single battery on your screen is another feature that has become standard on most of the 18650 dual changes.

Using the mod is easy. Just hold it in your palm with the screen facing you and squeeze it together. If you are used to having a fire button, you can press with the top of the fire wand. The higher the bar, the less pressure it has to light. As much as possible, it is always ideal to use an external charger for your cells. As a backup, however, Alien can charge its batteries evenly and efficiently. I never had a problem with the onboard charging system. If you look closely, you will notice that the battery door has an extra touch that promotes a balanced charge. It’s time for you to find that.

Should You Update?

If you are satisfied with the performance of your device, it is not essential to update the firmware. Especially if you are not using it in temperature control mode, as this is the main purpose of the update. If you are not satisfied with the new firmware, you can always return to the previous version. One of the most notable improvements is that Alien asks for a new role when she discovers it. Note, however, that sometimes it does not always capture its new resistance when it glides on an atomizer when it’s not active. You need to unscrew it, press the fire button and try again. This is the most annoying part of using this device. Be careful when changing the atomizer.

Pros:

  • Convenient to hold
  • Compact for a dual 18650 mod
  • 220 watts of power
  • Balanced load
  • Intuitive interface
  • Ergonomic drawbar
  • Available in a variety of colors
  • Firmware that can be updated
  • Well built

Cons:

  • It does not always immediately detect a new atomizer
  • The battery door may break under pressure
  • The finish will fade over time

Summary

There is not much to say about aliens. Very rarely have we decided to test a product launched a year ago, let alone a few months ago (not to mention that we have already investigated it at this time). In the years that have passed, 365 days seem like an eternity. In this case, however, it makes sense to do so.

We are there a year later. The alien SMOK is always strong. Is it still the best mod on the market? I will not give a direct answer, yes or no. It is not so easy. However, I would say it’s still one of the best dual 18650 mods on the market, just for the price.

I will not even compare it with the mods of three, four or five batteries, because that would be unfair. To sum it up, if you’re new to steaming, or even if you’ve been drinking for some time, you really cannot go wrong with a stranger. I cannot say it often enough, but personally I bought one with my money and I am completely satisfied with my purchase.
